Biography
“ The artist does not live in bliss. He is sensitive to the world, to the pulsation of his time, to the events which compel him to act. This is bound to happen. This is not an intellectual attitude but a profound feeling, something like a cry of joy which delivers you from anguish. ”
Joan Miró 1893-1983
Paul Greene is a multidisciplinary artist and writer whose art practise is based in Albury, New South Wales. As well as acquiring the more traditional use of materials and skills, Paul has also ventured into numerous other creative disciplines including writing, digital art, film making and experimental theatre production.
Examples of his output range considerably from his published book of drawings, Business As Usual, which is now in the collection of the National Gallery, Canberra, to Librettist and designer of the opera Volcano and Vision, composed by Rainer Linz and presented by the Calculated Risks Opera Company, Sydney, in 1990 and recorded and broadcast by the Australian Broadcast Commission.
Paul is also at present collaborating again with Melbourne composer Rainer Linz in publishing, for the first time English translations of some of the texts of the great German artist Kurt Schwitters (1887-1948).
Paul has also returned to the traditions of painting and drawing that have consumed him most of his life. He has continued his explorations of some might say a unique perspective on the human condition not so much as in the form of the grand gesture but in an eclectic wit done in an almost joyful defiance of the blackness of our times.
